Mercury: Richard's Setting Sign
The Setting sign, or Descendant, is important to life interpreting because it gives you a sense of what kind of person your client is looking for in a mate, How you are in one on one relationships, and what you keep hidden about yourself. Since the setting sign is the cusp of the 7th house it also holds meaning for relationships, your OTHER, projected self, spouse, and adversaries. this is a key aspect in Richard's chart for a number of reasons, mainly that his sun is in Gemini which is ruled by Mercury but his mercury itself is in Cancer which we will get to in a moment.
Mercury symbolizes reason, the thinking function, the ability to make contact externally with communication and perception or internally via your nervous system. Wit, speed, dexterity, capacity for learning. employment and commerce are essentially Mercury traits. Negatively speaking they can be overly rational, dry, lack of feeling, sleight of hand, sharpness of the tongue including sarcasm and cynicism and finally can block or be blind to empathy, belief or intuition.
Since Mercury was the messenger of the Gods it only seems fitting that Mercury be quick moving being the center of the communication hub. It can also represent the 5 physical senses and how they work as well as how we communicate. If there is a blockage with communication we can also see it through the Mercury aspects. Blocks in communication indicate that we are unwilling to share or might be afraid of sharing, or they may not be able to hear. The aspects to Mercury will show the communication difficulties that we may have experienced in our early years. this also shows us the difficulties that you carried with you into adulthood- never learning to discuss things properly, or fairly or at all in the early childhood environment. When parents do not communicate in front of the child they do not understand and since children imitate what they see and do not see this aspect they cannot practice it and become bad at communicating.
Mercury in Cancer
Richard's mind is likened to an antennae or a pair of feelers. He picks up all types of vibrations and implications sensitively. Unfortunately Richard takes all of these vibrations personally and it gets him upset. then Experiences the feeling of wanting to know but at the same time not wanting to know. He can recall conversations word for word and have a good memory. Richard has a sympathetic mentality and the way you speak can have a "stroking" quality which is very agreeable.Since Richard is so sensitive it would be best for him to cultivate a liking for the truth, even thought it will hurt, for that is what you are so capable of sensing. Otherwise a failure to look at the truth is followed by a failure to recognize it just when you need it.
Mercury in the 8th House
Richard is best suited for utilizing his capabilities in rooting out hidden information and the deep causes that they are responsible for what appears on the surface. He is able to contact more easily than others such mysteries such as sex and death; what lies beyond the grave fascinates him. Secret information likes to find you so be respectful of its contents.
Aspects of Mercury
Mercury conjunct Venus
When we see this combination it means that the mother has an influence on Richard's ability to communicate. it can also indicate a person who loves communication, the arts, literature, appreciating beauty in the world and someone who likes to talk alot. childhood environment made for an open communication making Richard see communications going on around him but not intellectually. This resulted in creating a wordy child who will then become a wordy adult talking too much about nothing or a prolific writer.
Mercury Square Jupiter
when these 2 planets are linked together it means that the ability to use the senses, to communicate, to use the mind, is combined with the relating principle. In order to have a relationship we must first be able to talk about ti with the person with whom we are trying to relate. Again this aspect points out that Richard was raised in a home where words were not used well and the mood of the childhood environment was excessive- and people are hurt by words - they aren't supportive of each other. His family members are more interested in role-playing that relating to one another making communication difficult. Richard took this as normal thinking that relationships are normal when words are difficult. this aspect needs to be worked through if Richard wants to truly communicate and share his thoughts and feelings with another person.
The power of Jupiter allows Richard the ability to expand the consciousness, to receive new ideas but this cannot happen unless Richard's words are received well by others. Richard has a difficulty talking openly once in a relationship. he may not relate honestly, may not listen, may not hear what others have to say, and possibly misquoting what he thinks he heard to end a relationship.
Mercury square Saturn
Since Mercury is the symbol of outgoing communication, the mind, the ideas, the 5 physical senses ans Saturn represents the law, tradition, the psychological influence of the father, our ideas of caution based on apprehensions that we may have absorbed from the early father image. when these tow are together it indicates that Richard takes words and communications very seriously. That inhibitions or traditions taught to us by the father will affect our ability to communicate. This tie can indicate a person who is serious, dependable and often hardworking. a Certain kind of loneliness may be conferred for when communication is restricted limitations may be placed on the ability to share thoughts.
From this, the psychological influence of the father (Saturn) impedes the ability to communicate and therefore produces adults who find words difficult. they have problems communicating what they want to those around them. During childhood , somehow the father created some block or fear that Richard responded to. it brings apprehension regarding self expression. in order to overcome this aspect Richard will have to work through the block set up years ago because of the relationship with the father.Once this has been accomplished, Richard can teach himself to communicate in a sturdy and diplomatic manner. until this aspect in understood words may come out harshly, or in some authoritarian manner that seems designed to offend the very people he wants to talk with. This aspect can restrict relationships, for the core of any relationship is the sharing of one's own thoughts and feelings to others. Mercury rules the mind, the thoughts, the ability to express one;s own thoughts to others and what is being said . when a father feels that his child should be seen and not heard he has no idea what kind of limitations to creative expression he is putting on Richard. this aspect makes you have to develop a sense of self-worth. Before one can confront authority figures in life, the inner self has to decide it is worth something.
Putting it all Together
Jupiter's profile hinted that there were problems communicating in the early childhood environment but it wasn't till we looked at the Mercury profile that we actually see where this is stemming from. Richard put alot of value into his father and the idea/concept of him and wanted to be just like him. He watched his fathers interactions with his mother but the communication was never supportive or he simply wasn't paying attention to what the mother was asking for. Since Richard saw that his mother was treated like she didn't matter to him, that the words she was saying were falling on deaf ears, Richard began believing that this is how you treat women. Due to his mothers erratic behavior because her needs were not being met by Richards father Richard started to equate women's reactions to being unpredictable and has a slight fear of women in this regard. Now into adulthood Richard learns that maybe imitating his father wasn't the best approach since he flits from one relationship to the next. His lack of affective communicating is a direct result of how his father treated him as a child. Almost as if he can still hear his father's voice inside of his head telling him what he should or should not do. A father's dominance can be total and overshadow the child's creative side to the point of stifling it completely. Part of Richards dilemma is how to relate towards others since his father taught him otherwise by having him be seen rather than be heard. This messed with Richard's sense of self and as a result didn't get a chance to assert himself or learn what it means to be a person; not a carbon copy role-playing version of what his father wanted him to be or what he thought his father was. It can also be said that Richard thinks with emotion, that hes reactive when emotions come towards him and his first line of defence will be his sharp words and tongue.
Richard is at odds with himself in a big way. Everything that Richard ever wanted to be is now being confronted by the haunting past of his demons... (i.e his father) Part of his life struggle will be to understand the person that is Richard Hill. Who is Richard Hill and what does he stand for? that certain truths (whether good or bad) need to come to the surface and be dealt with in order to move past this to be a better person. He needs to really see his father for who he truly was: someone as tortured as he was who didn't know how to cope with the daily stresses of life and took it out on the people closest to him. due to his inability to relate to others he shut out his son and his wife playing the role of husband and father instead of relating to them. What Richard saw growing up was just an act; but because no one ever told Richard that he still believes that this is true. That relationships are more for show than for something real and that fear of opening up to someone that they truly love will be the death of Richard if he cannot figure out how to communicate the things that he really wants to say without being fearful to say them out loud.
